Cycling’s Pain Faces

Chris Froome recently posted a photo of himself up on his twitter and Instagram accounts taken during the mountain prologue of the 2016 Critérium du Dauphiné (see right & above), which I have to say is one of the best ever ‘Cycling Pain Faces’ that I have ever seen and is a reminder that no matter how good you are, the pain is the same for all of us. The difference is that the top pros will just be going that much faster when experiencing it!

Pro Pain Faces

Below are a few other cycling pain faces that I thought were also worth sharing

King of the Faces
Thomas Volcker and his attacking style of racing makes him a real fan favorite, but it is also partly because of his facial expressions, which convey a real sense of every emotion he is going through at that moment. Be that joy as he crosses of the finish line in first place, sadness or anger because he has lost or pain! When it comes to making the best cycling effort faces he is without doubt the maillot jaune:

The Greatest Cycling Painface Ever?
According to a large number of folks on twitter, this photo of another of my favorite riders, Philippe Gilbert is the greatest pain face ever – whilst that may be debatable, what is not is the obvious amount of pain he is going through when that photo was taken!

The king is dead, long live the king!
Well that title is a tad dramatic I agree and whilst Thomas Volcker is far from being dead, in terms of cycling, he is well into his twilight years and so we all wonder who will take his place as the cyclist with a thousand faces – step forward Mr Fabio Aru.

A great example is the photo taken of him below at the 2015 Tour of Spain Riding for Astana, he eventually went on to win the race after a dramatic and I believe career defining performance from Tom Dumoulin of Team Giant-Alpecin:

Amateur Pain Faces

Anyway so as to show that at least in this department us amateurs can also compete with the pro’s below are a few that I have have found floating about – please if you have any pain faces of yourself or your mates and want to share them with the world contact me here as I would love to post them up here for you!

Scary Pain Faces
There is a fine line between pain and fear and that point is perfectly demonstrated in the photo below of Anthony Clarke at the 2011 NBX Grand Prix of Cyclocross taken by Ben Stevens:

Time Trialing Pain
I think you can really feel the pain for me in this one! – Taken by Marie Caminade of Cyclo4 at the 2016 Lot-et-Gironne Departmental TT Championships held in Saint Etienne de Fougères on the 14 May.
