I have stated heretofore in print and am still ready to maintain my pronouncement, that the tigerfish of Africa is the fiercest fish that swims. Let others hold forth as advocates for the mako shark, the barracudas, the piranah of the Amazon, or the blue fish of the Atlantic. To them I say ‘Pish and Tush’.” L. J. McCormick, 1949.

“Wakey Wakey… Rise and Shine It’s Tiger Time!”
On October 6th 2010 one of the biggest annual fishing events in Africa and certainly in Zimbabwe will begin. The Kariba International Tiger Fish Tournament has been recognized by the International Game Fish Association as one of the greatest Game Fish tournaments in the World and KITFT was made a qualifying round of the IGFA Inshore World Game Fish Championships.

History

The Kariba International Tiger Fish Tournament started way back in 1962, when a bunch of farmers deciding to go fishing.

Since then the tournament has grown and in 1991 there were 333 teams – some 300 more teams than the first tournament. At last year’s tournament 186 teams participated from 6 countries.

The biggest haul was recorded in 2000 when 9 910.700 kgs of fish were caught. The biggest fish was caught by Mike Otto in 1989 weighing 10.210kg. Ladies have also become a force to be reckoned with and both the ladies records were broken in 2000. The top Ladies Individual Aggregate stands at 58.890kg held by Char Ward, and the biggest fish by a lady being 8.850kg, held by Merinada Wheeler.

Aim
The eXtreme 5 Challenge is aiming to raise £100,000 for “Homes in Zimbabwe” (HIZ – UK registered charity 1104512). HIZ looks after destitute pensioners who lost their life savings in Zimbabwe’s economic collapse. Participants can either raise money for this charity or one of their own choosing. (More about Homes in Zimbabwe)

The Challenge
eXtreme 5 Challenge’s teams of 4 to swim, run, cycle and kayak whilst raising money for charity.

eXtreme 5 is looking for 100 teams to participate in the eXtreme 5 Challenge on Sunday 12 September 2010 at Willen Lake, Milton Keynes.

The challenge is a relay consisting of a:

  • 1.5km swim;
  • 5km kayak;
  • 30km cycle;
  • 10km run; whilst raising money for charity

“We came up with the concept of this team challenge after completing our own physical challenges in 34 days during the summer of 2009. We ran a 26 mile marathon, cycled 1050 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats, kayaked 60 miles along the Caledonian Canal and played four rounds of golf in 15 hours. We are challenging others to do something similar” said Simon Grint, one of the eXtreme 5 organisers.

This is going to be a fun day out for both participants and spectators with food, drink, music and a children’s play area. The event is free for spectators wanting to come along and cheer on the teams.

If the physical elements sound a bit daunting, there are other ways to support the event. The organisers are looking for volunteers to act as marshals and to man course refreshment stands on the day. If you would like to volunteer to help, please call the eXtreme 5 Challenge on 0845 056 8379.

Join the Chirundu.com Team

Chirundu.com LogoI am looking to form at least one Chirundu.com team.

I think initially the “Chirundu.com team” will just compete for fun, with the aim of just finishing. But depending on the amount of interest and the level of those wishing to compete, we could possibly put together more than one team, with one more serious than the other. So If you are interested in taking part and would like to join in or know somebody else who may be interested please contact me, letting me know your level of fitness and preferred event.

The Mashonaland Flying Club (MFC) has now been in existence for 52 years, when the Marlborough Flying Club became the Mashonaland Flying Club in 1957.

As you will be aware the club has fallen on hard times in recent years. In the good times MFC had about 850 members, but, as a result of people leaving the country and those remaining having to tighten their belts to cope with rising costs, these figures have dwindled. Currently membership figures are nearer to 100, of which only half are active members in Harare.

Many ex Mashonaland Flying Club students are now enjoying good careers flying for major airlines world wide; Emirates, Cathay Pacific, Thomas Cook, Thomson Airways, easyJet, Air Mauritius, MK Airlines and of course Air Zimbabwe to name a few. MFC has also produced many private pilots and has always provided a warm and happy welcome to all those who have walked under the Vampire arch. One only needs to have a look at the current MFC facebook site, to see how many of us look back on our days at MFC with sheer happiness.

In order to celebrate both MFC’s wonderful history and its continuing survival against all the odds and Concorde’s 40th Anniversary, Fiona Del Giudice, a Sussex based artist, has been commissioned to paint John Reid-Rowland’s legendary photograph of Z-MFC and Concorde at Harare Airport, 31st October 1993.

The water colour in its double mount measures 16” X 20”, the starting bid is £425-00, an absolute bargain for an original aviation watercolour of such a high standard. Please e-mail your bid to mashflyingclubauction@hotmail.com ( please give your name and bid in UK pounds ).

The bidding will open on Friday 27th November and will close on Saturday 12th December at 18-00 GMT (e-mails will be sent out intermittently advising you of the current bid). The winning bidder will be required to pay for shipping of the picture from the UK. Once the auction has closed all money raised above £425-00 will be donated to MFC to help with their fight for survival.

PLEASE BID GENEROUSLY IN ORDER TO HELP KEEP THIS WONDERFUL CLUB ALIVE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS!!!!

Please note: This auction is not being conducted by chirundu.com, I am just advertising it. If you require more information, please email mashflyingclubauction@hotmail.com
